NASCAR might take closer look at sponsorships

Ft WORTH, Texas (AP) a NASCAR said Friday it usually takes a look at how it grants vendors following the National Rifle Association turned the title sponsor of this weekend's Sprint Cup race at Texas within a national debate over gun rights. NASCAR said it has no official position on gun rights. "Our supporters, racing clubs and industry partners come from all walks of life and therefore have different points of views and opinions," the statement said. "As a hobby, we're in the business of bringing people together for entertainment, not political debate." Sponsorships are contracts directly between course and recruit, but NASCAR reserves the best to agree or scuttle them. "The NRA's sponsorship of the event at Texas Motor Speedway fit within existing parameters that NASCAR affords paths in getting partnerships," NASCAR said. "However, this example has made it clear that we need to have a closer look at our acceptance process continue, as present circumstances need to be considered when coming up with decisions." The NRA 500 on Saturday evening whilst the U.S. Senate weighs legislation intended to reduce gun violence in the aftermath of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last December. Sen. Joe Murphy, D-Conn., recently called on the Fox network never to transmit the competition and questioned the Victory Lane tradition at Texas, where the winner gets a cowboy hat and can fire six-shooters full of blanks to the air. The NRA also sponsored a second-tier Nationwide race last September at Atlanta, which like Texas Motor Speedway, is owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc.
