Manchester City: Why tweets count as much as trophies in the push for global ... - The Independent

There really is no doubting how Manchester City have made themselves the model of the modern, outward-facing club. Yes, they have struggled in the Champions League over the past two seasons, but they were top of the league of websites for clubs competing in the 2011/12 competition, based on an independent assessment of usability, design and quality. Only Arsenal came close among English teams.

They have also been voted best football team in the world for the use of social media, second only to basketball's Los Angeles Lakers across all sports.

However, it is only when you consider the respective brand equity of the players at their disposal that it becomes clear what they are up against as they seek to plant a foot on three continents and tell the world what it means to be City, as their terrace song goes.

Wayne Rooney has 5.5 million Twitter followers and Javier Hernandez 1.3m, while the entire population of south-east Asia seems to hang on Shinji Kagawa's every word – even though he doesn't utter too many. City have one, perhaps two, global superstars – Sergio Aguero, with 3.3m Twitter followers, and David Silva, who doesn't tweet a lot, with 760,000 followers.

You might think such things don't matter as much as what happens on the field of play. Sir Alex Ferguson once said that he'd rather his players went down to a good library than tweet. But this is how a good club becomes a global club and why driving up Twitter followers matters more than you might think at City.

For their chief executive, Ferran Soriano, seeking to make good on the vast Abu Dhabi investment, only being one of the top six teams in the world will do. "Consumers in general are able to remember five or six brands in each category [of business] but not 20," he has said of his time turning Barcelona into the force they have become. "In 2003 [at Barcelona], we were running a very high risk of not being able to bridge the gap with the top clubs, and Barcelona remaining a small local brand."

But the task Soriano faces at City bears no resemblance to the one the then Manchester United chairman, Martin Edwards, undertook in 1992. Edwards hired Edward Freedman as head of merchandising and saw him drive the marketing juggernaut United became. There was no Financial Fair Play to restrain United then. FFP will hinder City and there is no Lionel Messi coming through for Soriano, as there was when he went to work in Catalunya.

Chelsea will vouch for how difficult it can be turning a wealthy benefactor's investment into the kind of global brand that persuaded Saudi Arabian telecoms firms and Japanese paint manufacturers to pay heavily for an association with Manchester United. Ten years after Roman Abramovich's arrival at Stamford Bridge, and despite winning three domestic titles and a European Cup, Chelsea still trail United for global reach.

All of which explains the commercial revolution – including the search for possible partner clubs – going on behind the scenes at City as they attempt to drive up the revenues in lightning fast time. The domestic potential is limited – over 70 per cent of the TV audience is overseas – so Soriano will do whatever it takes for City to command global recognition.

He tells a story of how a Japanese barman in Tokyo, hearing him talking in Catalan, approached him to say "watashi wa kaiin desu!" ("I am a member") and flashed his Barcelona membership card. This is the kind of recognition he wants to replicate at City.

He probably didn't bank on his first season in the job finding City so far behind United in the Premier League and Europe's best in the Champions League. City might yet win the FA Cup but there are only two trophies that matter.

It is easy to see why, for all the trouble he sometimes caused, Mario Balotelli was a player whom the City owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan, genuinely liked to have at the Etihad – he brought attention to the club. It is partly for this reason that Barcelona are signing Neymar, and Edinson Cavani is so attractive to Soriano and City's director of football, Txiki Bergistain, who drives the transfer policy. These are players to make the world wake up to a club.

When United were making their giant strides across world football 20 years ago, Edwards could just have gone out and bought the equivalent of both.

But Soriano is operating in more straitened times and his task is infinitely more complicated. The subtitle of his management manual, which draws on his success at Barcelona is: "Goal: the ball doesn't go in by chance." Never has the mantra been more appropriate.

Revealed: Who Fergie thinks will win the Champions League... and it's not ... - Daily Mail

Sir Alex Ferguson has tipped German side Borussia Dortmund to spring a surprise in the Champions League this season and win it.

The Manchester United boss faces a tricky second leg against Real Madrid in two weeks, knowing that few obstacles with be tougher to overcome on the route to the final than Jose Mourinho's side.

After the first legs were completed this week, Bayern Munich and AC Milan emerged as serious contendors, but it is the side who helped knock out Manchester City that Fergie fears most.

'Bayern have always had capable and confident teams,' the United boss, who has won Europe's top prize twice, said. 'Last year they should have won the final and have added to their squad this year with Javi Martinez and Mario Mandzukic up front.

'I don't think they are paying too much attention to the league. Their concentration is on the European Cup and their European form has been very good.'

Jurgen Klopp's side are all but out of the Bundesliga title race, trailing Bayern by 15 points, and earned a 1-1 draw in their last 16 clash away to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Ferguson also reserved special praise for AC Milan, who produced the shock of the round when they beat pre-tournament favourites Barcelona 2-0.

'Over the last few years they (Milan) have played Barcelona quite a few times but they have never been steamrollered,' he added. 'They have always been tight games.

'In addition you have got the two Spanish teams and Milan so it is a really tough competition this year. But if we qualify against Madrid we will definitely come into the same bracket.'

The Unlikely Comparison: The Detroit Red Wings & Real Madrid - Winging It In Motown

So you may be asking yourself, what do a 32 time winner of the La Liga and an 11 time winner of the Stanley Cup have in common? During their immense success, they have both been forced to overcome great adversity. While Madrid has overcome this stage of success and is now back on top, the Wings are currently at this juncture where they will have to continue their championship form or they will collapse into a decade of fear, sorrow, and distress.

In order to fully comprehend what I am trying to get across, one must look back to the 17th of December, 2008. Real Madrid was off to a disappointing start (in their terms) and wanted to bolster their squad in the upcoming transfer window. Due to some injuries in the midfield, Madrid chose to sign Lassana Diara from Portsmouth FC. Diara was a fairly new player in the big world of sports but he had seen some time with the French national squad and was regarded as an up and coming prospect by many.

For those of you who don't know, Real Madrid, along with teams like Barcelona, Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, only sign the best of the best players. Due to this, many fans and journalists were bewildered by the fact that Madrid chose to bring in "Lass", as he is called, to fill in such a huge void on their midfield. One journalist said that it was the most non-Madrid like signing that he had ever seen in his time covering the team.

This is where we shift our attention from Spanish soccer back to hockey. Coming off last seasons disappointing playoff loss to the Nashville Predators, the Detroit Red Wings were sitting in an awkward position. Not only had they been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, but now two of their best defenseman were on the verge of leaving. Sure enough, Nicklas Lidstrom retired and Brad Stuart returned to San Jose. In order to fill the void created by the loss of the two defenseman and forward Jiri Hudler, Wings fans started scheming up ways in which the team would maybe be able to make a run after the top free agents, defenseman Ryan Suter and forward Zach Parise.

After weeks of thinking, hoping and planning, July 1st rolled around and Wings fans were ecstatic. Early indications said that the Wings were one of the front runners for both players. However, by the time the sun set, Zach Parise and Ryan Suter remained unsigned while the Wings had brought in Jonas Gustavsson, Jordin Tootoo, and Mikael Samuelsson. As the days went on hope turned to dismay as Suter and Parise signed mega-deals with the Minnesota Wild. Months passed and as a lockout seemed like a legitimate possibility, the Detroit Red Wings still had not brought in a defenseman to fill the huge voids left by Lidstrom and Stuart. 3 days before the NHL locked out their players, the Wings signed former Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo.

So, what is the point of all of this? To fully understand what I am trying to get across one must take a look at the current Real Madrid team. A team that includes stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira, and Karim Benzema, all of whom have been brought in since 2009. Last season, Real Madrid won the La Liga for the first time in 4 years. This was huge, after years of mediocrity and watching Lionel Messi and Barcelona run away with the title, Real Madrid was finally back on top.

What I am hoping is that the current Wings team is like the '08-'09 Real Madrid squad, a team filled with average role-players and a team that played below its own expectations. If that is true and history were to repeat itself, then within the next few years the Wings would return to their championship winning form, just like Madrid has done.

As shown to us by Real Madrid, there is always new possibility, and hopefully this bump in the road will be just as brief for the Detroit Red Wings as it was for Madrid.

Manchester City 2 Chelsea 0: Frank Lampard rues missed penalty - Evening Standard

Lampard was a kick away from his 200th Chelsea goal when he lined up a second-half spot-kick at the Etihad Stadium but Joe Hart, who stayed on after fouling Demba Ba, saved from his England team-mate.

Yaya Toure made Chelsea pay with a fine finish from inside the area and substitute Tevez made victory certain with a long-range effort late on.

The result reduced Manchester United's lead at the top of the table to 12 points but, perhaps more importantly with the title drifting away, increased City's advantage over third-placed Chelsea to seven.

Both managers had gone into the game under considerable pressure but City boss Roberto Mancini ended it far happier than Chelsea counterpart Rafael Benitez, who suffered more abuse from fans.

Benitez again put Fernando Torres and John Terry on the bench as he looked to drag City into a battle for second place, also restoring Lampard and Ba among six changes.

City were again without captain Vincent Kompany but Mancini opted to flood midfield by handing Jack Rodwell only his third City start with Sergio Aguero alone up front.

He was rewarded with a superb performance from Rodwell, who fully justified his inclusion as he attempts to ignite his City career after injury troubles.

He played a part in a positive start by City, who had their first shot within 40 seconds as Yaya Toure took aim from the edge of the area but Petr Cech saved easily.

City controlled possession with David Silva looking to pull the strings, Yaya Toure getting forward at every opportunity and Rodwell making several powerful runs.

It was some time before Chelsea threatened, but after initially being beaten, Kolo Toure recovered well to cut off Ba's counter-attack.

Despite their early dominance, it was 15 minutes before City really tested Cech as Matija Nastasic went forward for a corner but the goalkeeper dealt with the Serbian's powerful header.

Lampard, looking to reach that double century by scoring for a fourth successive Premier League game, had his first sight of goal from a 30-yard free-kick but blazed well over.

The game became scrappy as Chelsea tried to regain some control and Ramires was booked for a late challenge on Yaya Toure.

City continued to look the more creative and another good chance came as Aguero pulled back a James Milner cross and Pablo Zabaleta's powerful volley was headed away by Cahill.

Rodwell then tested Cech twice in just over a minute, first forcing the keeper to tip over a powerful 25-yard drive and then heading into his arms from the resulting corner.

City went into the second half with the same determination but Aguero's acrobatic volley from Silva's cross went well wide.

The game's pivotal moment came in the 50th minute as City switched off at the back and Ba raced on to a long ball from deep.

Ba shrugged off Kolo Toure and clipped the ball past the out-rushing Hart but was brought down as he got tangled in the goalkeeper's legs.

Referee Andre Marriner immediately pointed to the spot but importantly felt Ba was just moving away from goal and did not show Hart a card.

Hart made the most of the reprieve to earn instant redemption by saving from Lampard, who had scored his last 10 spot-kicks, low to his right.

He was in action again seconds later to deal with the resulting corner and City set about making sure Chelsea paid for missing their chance.

Surprisingly, Mancini opted to replace the influential Rodwell with Tevez but the resulting change in shape gave Chelsea more to think about.

The game opened up as Aguero raced through from a Milner pass and chipped just over before Ramires almost exposed Kolo Toure on the counter at the other end.

Milner found Silva in the box with a clever reverse pass and his pull-back found Yaya Toure on the edge of the area.

The Ivorian still had much to do but his first two touches took out two defenders and gave him space to curl a superb low finish beyond Cech and in at the far post.

Chelsea made a double change in response with Lampard, after a frustrating game by recent standards, making way along with Eden Hazard for Victor Moses and Oscar.

But it was City's substitute Tevez who made the most dramatic impact, putting the game beyond the visitors with a superb strike from outside the area five minutes from time.

Manchester City 2 Chelsea 0: fit statement - Telegraph.co.uk

The form of Toure, Sergio Aguero and David Silva will offer you Mancini trust City may at least end the campaign in form resembling that of winners. It wasnat way too long before Chelsea aspired to play like Barcelona. Mancini is under great pressure since, itas believed, Cityas Spanish-influenced structure needs the same.First you've to get. Then earning isnat enough and you've to do so with style. Neither of the groups did enough of either recently. The dourness of the beginning phases demonstrated the present predicament of two teams with significantly compromised aspirations for the remainder of this campaign. When the self-preservation of the two managers is the primary emphasis ahead of kick-off, itas a guarantee of a zero chance technique on the park. Rafa Benitezas teams always play to incorporate and wait for errors and not a fifteen-point distance to Manchester United before kick-off was going to prompt Mancini to look up the expression agung-hoa in his training dossier. Aguero started whilst the only striker, midfielders asked to support and probe in support, nevertheless when Tevez appeared in the second half the game exposed and their form was found by City. Jack Rodwell, among the several City workers seen at The Etihad less than Sheikh Mansour, made his first start since October and did well. Samir Nasri - the afifty percentera as he's now recognized - was on the table until injury time. Nasri isnat the only real scapegoat of the growing season, nevertheless. The choice of Kolo Toureas heavy presence to Joleon Lescott tells the England international where he stands. For Chelsea, Benitez managed his policy of rotating leader John Terry, whose insufficient speed he finds hard every week to trust. Terry was a subscription. All the original hunger and desire was found by City, Toureas goalbound attack plugged after just 42 seconds. Petr Cechas reflexes were needed seriously to swat absent Matija Nastisicas header after 15 minutes and when sent through by Silva four minutes later, Aguero was guilty of over indulgence. The Argentineas major touch ran the ball of play as he tried to dribble past Cech. Cech stayed the busier owner before half-time, Rodwell featuring a lot of glimpses of the talent that attracted Brian Marwood to his signature last summer. Chelsea had provided little fighting risk but needs to have led on 51 minutes when Hart mistimed his function from goal and went into Ba. Umpire Andre Marriner had no option but to give the punishment, but Hartas save yourself galvanised City. Mancini ultimately sent on Tevez to help Aguero on 55 minutes and opportunities began to flow, with Toureas attack and Tevezas easy minute four minutes from time punishing a, soulless Chelsea and guaranteeing United still have plenty of work to complete.

West Bromwich Albion vs. Sunderland: Final score 2-1, Lukaku brace sees ... - SB Nation

The hosts began the match on the back foot, and Sunderland were only too happy to exploit poor play from the Baggies midfielders. Claudio Yacub was the worst offending, and a misplaced pass from the Argentine saw Steven Fletcher free at the top of the box. The striker's low shot was a few coats of paint from finding the back of the net, thumping off the base of Ben Foster's right hand post, with Danny Graham failing to convert the rebound.

But that 24th-minute episode sparked West Brom into life, and they came roaring at the Black Cats defence for the rest of the half. Youssuf Mulumbu should have put them ahead 1-0 after Liam Ridgewell's superb cross found him unmarked at the edge of the six-yard box only to head wide, and Romelu Lukaku's perfectly good goal was disallowed thanks to Seb Larsson's foul on Steven Morrisson. Nevermind advantage, eh, ref.

It's not out of the question that Roger East was attempting to make up for his error shortly when he called a penalty on Craig Gardner shortly thereafter. It didn't seem particularly plausible for the right back to have moved his arm out of the way of Chris Brunt's cross, but the whistle blew immediately nonetheless, and Lukaku stroke home the spot kick to make it 1-0 to West Brom.

Sunderland had a chance to equalise shortly after halftime when a corner-kick induced scramble left Foster completely exposed, and Stephane Sessegnon's weak, off-balance snap shot was only kept out by the presence of Mulumbu on the back post.

West Brom were still in control, however, and they had opportunities to go further ahead through the impressive Lukaku, who had a trio of close calls before he was finally able to net again -- albeit in somewhat fortunate fashion. There was nothing lucky about the way he blew past John O'Shea on the wing, but Titus Bramble's poor backpass combined with Simon Mignolet's saw the ball ricochet off the big Belgian from point-blank range and bounce straight in.

The visitors responded well, however, and Sessgnon had a fine effort kept out by Foster before finally finding the back of the net from 15 yards as the West Brom defence failed to clear their lines. That should have set up a grandstand finish, but it was the Baggies who looked closer to scoring again, and Mignolet was called into action with a fantastic save from Brunt following another Bramble error.

There were a couple of close calls on Foster's goal, and James McClean might have gone better when he was allowed a last-second volley from ten yards which he ballooned over, but it came as no surprise at all when East blew the whistle for full time and gave West Brom a well-earned win.

QPR 0 - Manchester United 2: Harry Redknapp hopes for happier returns - Express.co.uk

But what he will not find waiting for him as a present from Sandra or the kids, is a player with the quality of Ryan Giggs. And boy does the QPR manager need one right now.

Manchester United arrived at Loftus Road as favourites for the title. Thanks to yet another masterful display by the evergreen Giggs, they left with the red ribbons ready to be tied on to the trophy.

But Redknapp believes that in Bobby Zamora and Loic Remy, he has the strike partnership that can still get them out of trouble.

This match was his 999th senior appearance for club, country and the GB Olympic team and the way he struck United's second, game-clinching, goal 10 minutes from time rolled back the years.

He hit his first-ever United goal at Loftus Road in 1994, in a 3-2 win. United's other stunning goalscorer on Saturday, full-back Rafael, was a toddler at the time.

Ryan is unbelievable. It is getting boring. He is the same in training, he just loves to play football. He plays, he scores, he assists.

Rafael said : "Ryan is unbelievable. It is getting boring. He is the same in training, he just loves to play football. He plays, he scores, he assists."

You simply have to defy age – and Redknapp is doing it just as well as Giggs, considering the pressure. He said: "It is my birthday next week, on March 2.

"I reckon there is no better way to spend it than with 90 minutes getting abuse at Southampton. They'll be calling me a scummer for my time at Portsmouth." Saints fans, of course, will never forgive Redknapp for his two spells in charge at Portsmouth. But more importantly, for the fact that he failed to keep Southampton up in his short stint in charge in 2005.

West Ham, Pompey and Spurs have all benefited from his ability to work the miracle and avoided relegation. QPR may be stranded seven points adrift of safety right now but Redknapp said: "Now we have got Zamora and Remy together that is our chance.

"Even a half-fit Bobby is a top player. He needs an operation on his hip, but he is still going out there. At least now I think we will score. We have scored only 19 goals all season. But Bobby can score, Remy can score.

Danica makes more history by leading lap

The first woman to start from the pole at the Daytona 500 has become the first female to lead a lap in a NASCAR Cup race.

Patrick sent the huge crowd into a frenzy when she snatched the lead from Michael Waltrip on lap 90 after a series of pit stops under yellow. She led two laps before Denny Hamlin surged to the front.

But Patrick has shown her qualifying run was no fluke. She's got a strong car and has been in the top 10 all day as the 200-lap race approaches the midway point.

Patrick switched to NASCAR last year after becoming the first woman to lead laps at the Indianapolis 500, as well as being the first to win an IndyCar race.

In the strangest part of the buildup to the Daytona 500, Mr. Cent brought back memories of Joe Namath's awkward attempt to plant one on Suzy Kolber when he tried the same move with Andrews on pit road.

Former 500 winners Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart and Jamie McMurray were caught up in the crash on lap 33. So was defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski.

The melee began coming through the tri-oval when Kasey Kahne's car began to slide across the track after appearing to get bumped from behind by Kyle Busch.

At least two other drivers also got caught up in the mess: Juan Pablo Montoya and Casey Mears. Joey Logano made a great move to dodge the spinning cars.

HANG ON TIGHT: From one defending champion to another, Brad Keselowski had a piece of advice for Daytona 500 starter Ray Lewis:

The retired Baltimore Ravens star served as honorary starter for the Daytona 500. Lewis waved the green flag without incident Sunday to start the "Great American Race."

"Brad texted me on the way in, the one rule is, don't drop the flag," Lewis said before the race. "I'm going to squeeze the flag very hard. I want to watch this and be a part of it. To be here is an awesome experience."

Lewis was one of several stars at Daytona International Speedway. Rappers T.I. and 50 Cent attended NASCAR's season opener, which has Danica Patrick starting on the pole.

Oscar-nominated actor James Franco was the grand marshall and said, "Drivers and Danica, start your engines!" The Zac Brown Band played a pre-race concert in the Daytona International Speedway infield. Band member Clay Cook performed the national anthem.

Retired baseball pitcher Tom Gordon, comedian Drew Carey, and Wes Welker and Steve Spurrier also were in attendance.

Lewis called Keselowski on the eve of the 2012 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway and left him an inspirational voice message. Keselowski also often listens to Lewis' motivational speeches before races.

"I caught a glimpse of how he always watched my videos and it really inspired him," Lewis said. "That's when me and him really started having conversations with each other, and from there it just turned into a friendship. I send him motivational things, and heads-up on what I am doing, that's where the relationship has gone."

DANICA DROPS BACK: Danica Patrick made history by becoming the first woman to start from the pole in a NASCAR Cup race.

Choosing the outside spot on the front row, Patrick gave up the lead to Jeff Gordon on the very first lap, missing out on an early chance to become the first female to lead a Cup lap.

Patrick went on the radio before the race to thank her crew for giving her such a strong car. "I'll do the best job I can to do my end of the deal today," she said. "All in all, thank you for everything. You guys are awesome."

Later, Patrick sent the huge crowd into a frenzy when she snatched the lead from Michael Waltrip on lap 90 after a series of pit stops under yellow. She led two laps before Denny Hamlin surged to the front.

Of course, this year is different. Danica Patrick is the first woman to start from the pole in a Cup race, and Franco hinted beforehand that he was planning an audible. As unpredictable as ever, he passed on a chance to copy the command that was used when Patrick raced in the Indianapolis 500, "Lady and gentlemen, start your engines."

One day after a harrowing crash injured dozens of fans in the stands, those same seats are filling up for the Daytona 500.

"These should be good seats," said Rick Barasso, as he settled into a spot that was right in the danger zone when Kyle Larson's car slammed into the catch fencing on the final lap of a Nationwide Series race Saturday. "I mean, what are the chances of it happening again?"

That seems to be the attitude of the fans heading into the Daytona 500, the season-opening Cup race and biggest event on the NASCAR schedule. Most people say it's worth the risk to sit next to the ear-rattling action — no more than 20 feet away for those in the first row. They love to hear the engines, smell the exhaust, and feel the wind whipping in their face as 43 cars go by at nearly 200 mph.

Raymond Gober returned to the same location where he was nearly struck by a bolt from Larson's car. He scooped up the debris as a souvenir, though he acknowledged being a little nervous about his seat on the back row of the lower level. He even considered wearing his motorcycle helmet to the 500, but figured "everybody would start laughing at me." Next year, he plans to buy an upper-level seat in the main grandstand.

There are grim reminders of what happened Saturday: a bloody spot that had been washed down (not entirely, though), a tire mark on a seat, another seat that was partially bent from getting struck by that same tire.

50 Cent makes awkward move on TV reporter

Casillas healing from surgery dreams with getting title this year

Iker Casillas says his recovery from the broken bone in his hand is going much better than expected and he might be right back involving the Real Madrid posts as soon as late March.

Casillas' finger was broken by a random end from his team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa throughout Madrid's Copa del Rey quarter-final sport at the Mestalla on January 23.

It was feared he'd experience 3 months on the sidelines, and the club moved quickly to signal Diego Lopez for 3.5 million from Sevilla to perform in their likely season-defining activities against Barcelona in the Copa and Manchester United in the Champions League.

The Madrid club leader told reporters on Thursday night, at the beginning of a new club look at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, that the first schedule had just been a worst-case scenario.

"I am feeling very positive," Casillas said. "The doctor gave the worst-case scenario to me, he said three months it may get. But last week when the splint was removed, I was told I had one month left. Now I'm doing effective exercises to have freedom and power back in the finger."

Casillas said he had been working hard at Madrid's Valdebebas training service to get straight back playing the moment possible.

"Until now I've maybe not had much power in it, but I'm getting it back little by little," he said. "We are in the halfway point of the injury. I've still got monthly to go. I'll need to work more and experience more to get right back the flexibility of before. I am looking forward to returning. It's worse being off the message than on it."

The big event was also attended by Casillas' team-mates including Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria, Jose Callejon, Nacho and Kaka, though coach Jose Mourinho was absent.

Alonso told reporters that he did not know yet whether he'd get over his groin issue over time for next Tuesday's Copa semi-final second leg at Barcelona's Camp Nou.

"I am in the restoration stage," the midfielder said. "I am trying to get better as soon as possible, to get gone the discomfort and reunite in top form. A lot of people ask when I will prepare yourself. I hope to be able to perform against Barca, but I don't have an answer right now."

Former Liverpool person Alonso stated that, with the link balanced at 1-1, whoever obtained first in the Champions League last 16 return sport at Manchester United on March 5 could be favourites to advance.

"They could have the help of the fans," he said. "It will be described as a challenge. The side that scores first is likely to be favourites. Old Trafford is a superb floor and it's the type of match we all like to play. The link is extremely open."

Di Maria stated that it might suit Madrid to be playing abroad in both of the future, potentially season-defining, games.

"Things are getting well and develop to carry on this way," he explained. "We know that we've to have major matches in both contests and that it'll maybe not be easy. Perhaps playing away is going to be inside our favor since we do well when things are against us. We have had this week to work with the easiest way to approach the games. I really hope everything goes well."

Benzema, who remains question for Saturday evening's La Liga game at Deportivo La Coruna, said he was not worried about his recent bad form before goal.

"I hope than I have to date that I score more goals, nevertheless the important thing could be the team and to win the upcoming matches," he said. "We need certainly to work together to win. We have an excellent group and we're all in good form."

Ricardo Kaka executed excellent in the game against Deportivo

"From the very first moment of the next half we saw an alteration of attitude. We didn't win because of the alterations, that have been made in the twelfth second of the 2nd half, but because of the change we made. It had been the attitude of all the people that sparked the comeback.

"It holds true that actually he [Kaka] is playing well. His state of mind assists him and this is essential for the staff, that he's another option and that he is playing well. That's usually positive.

Kaka's performance also received the reward of assistant mentor Aitor Karanka, who had been pleased about the reaction of the team after going behind to a Riki hit on 35 minutes.
"We knew that Deportivo weren't playing well and saw us being an possibility to change their fortunes. In the 2nd half we increased our play, we scored two goals and we could just take the three items house or apartment with us."

The gain moved Real to within 13 points of league leaders Barcelona, before the Blaugrana surrounded out Sevilla afterwards Saturday night. Inspite of the profit remaining the exact same, Kaka believes victory over Depor may raise Real's odds of claiming silverware this expression.

"I am much better. What we've nearby is interesting and it is the major area of the season and if the director wants me to play I will be there to simply help in those matches."

"The group is playing well and things are receiving better for me also. In soccer everything changes rapidly and I am happy to help the team win.
"[It was] an essential victory in a very difficult match. In the initial half we were a little nervous and a few mistakes were made by us. In the 2nd half we increased and we won three points which are important for us and for what's in the future over the next several weeks," Kaka told the club's officers website.
True came from behind at the Riazor, with Kaka rating the equaliser before an 88th-minute winner was scored by Gonzalo Higuain for the guests. Real Madrid 1-1 Manchester United: Real master but United...

Sir Alex Ferguson named a very positive starting XI, with four outright attacking players in the side – Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa both started. Jonny Evans played at centre-back rather than Nemanja Vidic.

We knew how Real Madrid would play, and this was about how Ferguson would respond. Manchester United's strategy might have reminded Jose Mourinho of his Inter side that were victorious in this competition three years ago – there may have been four attackers in the side (three forwards and a number ten) but two of the forwards were placed on the flanks and asked to play very defensive-minded roles, protecting the two United full-backs.

Wayne Rooney and Welbeck both offer great attacking ability, of course, but this wasn't about Ferguson trying to cram as many attackers into his side as possible, more about choosing the best men for a particular, defensive-minded job. A younger Ryan Giggs, an on-form Antonio Valencia or Park Ji-Sung, who specialised in counter-attacking displays away at big clubs in his prime, would probably have started here.

United's performance was cautious and patient. They sat back and invited Real pressure (a little too much for Ferguson's liking, judging by his post-match interview) before attempting to play on the counter-attack, and providing their main goalscoring threat from set-pieces. That caution was crucial, because it meant Real were unable to attack the space in behind on the counter-attack, which is Mourinho's side speciality. It's difficult to remember Real launching any particularly dangerous breaks.

The one way United were brave was when attacking corners – Real are ruthless in the way they transfer the ball quickly into attack having defended set-pieces, and they score an astonishing number of goals in this manner. There was one briefly dangerous Real counter-attack that came to a halt on the left touchline from United's first corner, but Ferguson's decision to put plenty of men into the opposition box at corners was justified when Welbeck headed in.

The specific question, of course, was how United would go about stopping Cristiano Ronaldo. As expected, Ferguson used Phil Jones up against him, and told Jones to follow Ronaldo pretty much wherever he went. Jones' main position, however, was in a right-sided defensive midfield role, the same position he played against Gareth Bale a few weeks ago, which stopped Ronaldo cutting inside and shooting with his right foot.

Now, while Ronaldo scored the equaliser with a superb header, it's fair to say United's approach against him worked reasonably well. Yes, he had a typical number of attempts from goal, but the majority were from long-range, with three attempts from free-kick situations. By forcing Ronaldo over to the opposite side, United had moved him away from his preferred position – and he plays on the left because he's most prolific from that zone. His tendency to drift away from that flank was also helpful to Rafael, who had an extremely nervous period towards the end of the first half, but was rarely tested after half-time.

Jones stuck tight to Ronaldo, and although his job was unglamorous, scrappy and depended on Ronaldo missing half-chances, it was overall a pretty good performance.

United had two problems, however. The first was from the other side, where Angel Di Maria was also cutting inside to shoot with his left foot – he was probably the game's brightest player, which made it surprising Mourinho removed him midway through the second half.

We should have known United would have been troubled by him – it was essentially the same situation as in the game against Tottenham (see the headline of the report from that game) – by using Jones so far to the right, and with Michael Carrick forced to stay central and watch Mesut Ozil, Patrice Evra was left exposed. Aaron Lennon was the most dangerous player in the Spurs game, Di Maria was most dangerous here.

Evra started off sticking extremely tight to him (at one point, he followed him so far across the pitch that they ended up tangling on the opposite touchline) but kept his position more regularly in the second half, and Di Maria had two shots from centre-right positions that went close. That space, in the right-sided channel, was also exploited by Sami Khedira moving forward from midfield – he's not an overly creative player, but the statistics show he created five chances (no other player created more than three) purely because he was given time and space to play simple passes.

The other problem with focusing on Ronaldo was that Fabio Coentrao got space on the overlap. Rooney didn't look comfortable in his right-sided role – he sometimes appeared too keen to move up the pitch as if trying to start counters (when Real hadn't yet lost possession) and his passing was frequently wayward.

But more problematic was Rooney's defensive mistakes. There were three in particular. In the first ten minutes, he charged back to help defend against Ronaldo (despite the fact Rafael and Jones were already doubling up against him) and left Coentrao free – the left-back hit the post.

Next was a poor piece of play for Real's goal – Rooney had enough time to get out to Di Maria, but he gave the Argentine space to whip the ball into the box for Ronaldo at the far post, after Real's two wingers had briefly swapped sides.

Finally, midway through the second half, Rooney allowed Coentrao to run past him towards the far post, and diverted the ball towards the goal, where David De Gea made an unconventional save with his feet. They were probably Real's best three efforts of the game, and all stemmed from poor positional play by Rooney.

On the other flank, Welbeck was much better. He was up against a weaker full-back, admittedly, but he had the acceleration to sprint past Alvaro Arbeloa on the break, and got himself into good goalscoring positions.

Ahead of him, Kagawa wasn't permanently involved but did attempt a couple of neat one-twos with Van Persie, and his overall contribution when he received possession was good. He showed an understanding of his role – playing in midfield to deny Real's midfielders complete freedom on the ball, and then darting in behind on the break. That was what he did so well at Dortmund, and although he's not yet up to full speed at Real, it was encouraging to see Ferguson use him in his proper position.

That said, Ferguson switched Kagawa and Welbeck after the break. This was an understandable move – United could afford to 'experiment' in the zone against Arbeloa, and Welbeck's pace had looked so promising that it was worth moving him into a more advanced position. Besides, Kagawa's link-up play could theoretically help United retain possession in the centre of the pitch.

The second half situation was an exaggerated version of the first half – Real played higher up the pitch, United dropped deeper and still tried to break. In fact, the away side's best moment of the game came shortly after the break, when a classic 'up, back and through' saw Evra racing through on goal, where he was halted by a slightly clumsy Varane challenge.

There were essentially three stages to the substitutions. The first was a straight Real swap – Benzema off, Gonzalo Higuain on. Neither offered a significant threat, which both summarises Real's main weakness, and highlights how impressive United's centre-back pairing was.

Next, Ferguson added fresh legs to the flanks, with Giggs and Valencia playing the final 20 minutes in the wide midfield positions – considering how exhausting those roles were for Rooney and Welbeck, two players who prefer playing upfront anyway, it made sense.

Finally, Mourinho seemed to introduce extra caution to his midfield zone. Luka Modric replaced Di Maria with Ozil going right – that's usually a substitution you'd associate with ball retention rather than penetration, and Di Maria had been very lively. Mourinho then brought on Pepe for Xabi Alonso – maybe in the knowlegde that Alonso was one booking away from a suspension. Still, Mourinho was hardly going for the win – Kaka, for example, remained on the bench.

The scoreline owed much to individual contributions in the penalty box. Van Persie could have won it with two late chances, which came about following a quick United attack – but the real star was De Gea. His centre-backs did well, but the Spaniard was still forced to make at least two top-class saves, and a succession of other decent stops.

His performance tonight showed exactly why Ferguson signed him, but in a way this was a demonstration of the fact De Gea isn't a natural Manchester United goalkeeper. He's always been capable of these brilliant saves, but it's extremely rare United require their goalkeeper to make a succession of fine stops (previous goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar wasn't as agile, but had more of a presence about him when taking aerial balls, and playing the ball with his feet, which is the kind of thing United require more consistently from their keeper).

By playing for such a dominant side, De Gea is unable to show his best attribute on a regular basis within one game – but when United do have their backs against the wall, he's a fine safety net.

"The disappointing thing for me was that in the first half, we sat back off them too much," said Ferguson. "They got a lot of play around the box – it's not healthy, it's not good to watch."

That proved United conceded more pressure than he intended, and their draw depended too much on De Gea's display to consider this a fine tactical display from United. Still, they did certain things well – Ronaldo was not invisible but certainly not at his best either, the centre-backs performed excellently, and Welbeck's pace was a threat.

"They changed the way they play," said Mourinho. "Their block was very very low…they were waiting for a set-piece or a counter-attack to score a second goal, but they defended well."

Real didn't do enough to break down the deep United defence, and the lack of a genuinely top-class centre-forward in these type of situations is perhaps Real's biggest weakness.

(I'm away to watch some football in Italy this weekend, so no updates until the CL action next week. It also means that (a) I don't have time to cover Shakhtar v Dortmund – will do the second leg, of course and (b) I can't moderate the comments so will have to leave this one closed. Sorry!)

The Ratings: Granada CF 1-2 FC Barcelona | totalBarça

It was far from easy, but Barcelona put an end to a mini-streak of two league matches without wins on a road with a Messi-inspired 2-1 win at Granada, secured deep into the second half. The Argentine broke the 300-goal mark at the club and carried the team to yet another win in their quest for the league title. Here are the ratings for last night's match:

Blameless in the Granada goal and had some very nice saves, including a crucial one in the dying minutes to prevent Granada's equalizer.

Had to leave in the first half due to yet another injury, but was getting exposed by the Granada attackers time and again before that, never looked calm and assured at all in this match.

Struggled a bit with the pace of Granada's forwards at first, but was mostly solid overall and improved as the match went on.

Always alert and barely put a foot wrong, averting some potentially dangerous situations with efficient defensive plays.

Extremely active and dangerous on the attacking end of the pitch, but his final ball wasn't always the best. Still an excellent outlet down the right flank, combining brilliantly with Messi and co. as usual up front.

Broke up play countless times, avoiding potentially dangerous counterattacks, and was competent, even if not as dynamic as usual, in his distribution in midfield.

Showed great passing and skills in this match, but still lacks the metronomic consistency of Xavi to lead the midfield.

Not as involved in the match as he'd have liked but dangerous in the rare occasions he was. Bizarrely, his shot ended up being an assist to Messi's equalizer.

Not brilliant, but as relentless in his off the ball work as ever, thus creating space for his teammates to shine. Was quite unlucky not to score as his shot hit the post.

A performance to forget in every way; he put an end to the team's moves more often than he created anything even remotely dangerous. Was replaced in the second half.

Wasn't exactly at his most influential best throughout the 90 minutes, but still decided the match yet again. He scored goal #300 with a simple tap-in and #301 with a fabulous direct free kick to secure another Barcelona win in La Liga.

Injected a lot of pace to the team's attack in his 30 minutes on the pitch and was considerably better than Sanchez, but his actions still ended up being inconsequential for the most part.

Only played for 20 minutes and wasn't particularly influential, but it was more than long enough to showcase his tremendous skill and vision.

Manchester United Names Ed Woodward Top Executive as CEO ...

LONDON - Manchester United, the most valuable sports franchise in the world, said Wednesday that long-time CEO David Gill will step down mid-year. Executive vp Ed Woodward will assume his responsibilities, but keep his current title.

The English soccer club, which has a global fan base that follows its stars on TV and on the Internet and buys its popular merchandise, had its IPO last summer, making it a rare sports powerhouse to be listed on a stock exchange. Media and entertainment industry analysts are covering the stock as Manchester United is seen as a big content franchise.

Woodward has been with Manchester United since 2005. He initially focused on developing a growth strategy before assuming oversight of the club's commercial and media operations.

Gill, 55, joined the board of the club, known as the "Red Devils," in Feb. 1997 and has been its CEO since Sept. 2003. He will remain on the board. He was appointed vice chairman of the English Football Association in October and has been nominated as its candidate for the executive committee of European soccer association UEFA.

"I have always been conscious of the fact that, as a member of staff, I was always just a temporary custodian of this marvelous institution," Gill said. "I am also of the view that all businesses need to refresh themselves with new management and ideas and after 10 years in charge, I believe it is appropriate for someone new to pick up the baton."

Richard Arnold, currently commercial director, will become group managing director and oversee all commercial and operational aspects of the club.

Manchester United's stock earlier this month hit a new high of $19.34. It has traded as low as $12 since the club went public.

In early Wednesday trading, the stock was down only 0.9 percent at $18.65 as investors seemed to be comfortable with the leadership appointment from within. That gave it a market value of $3.05 billion. Forbes magazine last year estimated the value of the soccer franchise at $2.23 billion.

Credit Suisse analyst Michael Senno last week reiterated his $21 price target and "outperform" rating on the stock of Manchester United.

"On-field performance is the biggest swing factor to our fiscal year 2013 estimates," he wrote, predicting some possible upside. "A higher-than-expected Nike [sponsorship] renewal deal is also a potential catalyst."

Alex Ferguson warns Manchester United stars: Dont step of the gas ...

With the Premier League virtually sewn up and a place in the last eight of the Champions League beckoning, Fergie wants his stars to keep their feet on the gas.

And Monday's man-of-the-match Nani said: "It is very important, the manager has told us that he wants to win the FA Cup and we are very focused on this competition.

Nani stepped out of the Old Trafford shadows with a goal against Reading and an assist for Javier Hernandez's clincher.

The Portuguese winger, 26, was offered to Zenit St Petersburg this season and has also been linked as part of a package for Porto's Colombian winger James Rodriguez.

Nani's close pal Anderson, 24, believes that despite struggling to hold down regular first-team places, the pair can be part of a group who could form the backbone of the team for the next few years.

Anderson believes he is getting back to his best after being plagued by knee and hamstring injuries for much of the past three years.

Plus, they are favourites to KO Real Madrid and reach the last eight of the Champions League after a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu in the first leg of their second-round clash.

"We have a good team, we have a good squad and if everyone remains focused and concentrated then we can win everything.
