2013 NFL Draft Grades: Breaking Down Every Team's Class

Now that the 2013 NFL draft is over, all 32 teams feel like they have a better shot at reaching the Super Bowl next season.  However, some teams may not have done as well in the draft as they could have.

These grades are based off of picks addressing needs and other talent available at the time of the pick.  These grades are not based off of how these prospects or the team will fare next season.

The Jaguars were one of the worst teams in the NFL last season.  However, a solid draft class with some very good picks addressed a lot of needs for this team.  It appears the Jags are giving Blaine Gabbert every chance to succeed next season, and the team is in good position to start winning games.

Luke Joeckel was the clear big pick, as he will come in and help keep the quarterback upright.  However, the team also got a great prospect in the second round by picking up Johnathan Cyprien.  He is a solid safety who loves to hit the ball-carrier and can actually make a big impact on the defense.

Along with adding protection and defensive players, the Jaguars were able to bring in a couple of weapons.  They brought in Ace Sanders, a 5'7'' receiver who has incredible speed and can make an impact in both the return game and the passing game.

They were also able to bring in Denard Robinson, who was one of the more interesting picks.  It may have been a reach to grab him in the fifth round, but he is a versatile athlete who has big play potential.

The Eagles made quality picks one after another in the draft this year.  With a new head coach in Chip Kelly, the look of this team is going to be different in 2013, particularly on offense.

The addition of Lane Johnson was the perfect fit for what will likely be a fast-paced offense this year.  He is an athletic tackle who is in good enough shape to keep up with a fast offense.

Zach Ertz is a great route-runner at tight end and will make an impact in the passing game.  Bennie Logan is someone who can fill the gaps and stop the run.  Even the pick of Matt Barkley wasn't too bad, as the team was able to get a second-round prospect in the fourth round.

The biggest steal in the draft might have been Jordan Poyer falling to the Eagles in the seventh round.  He did a great job at Oregon State and was projected by some to be a second- or third-round pick.  However, his smaller size may have scared other teams off.  The Eagles will be getting a great prospect who can come in an immediately play as a nickel corner.

All eyes were on the Ravens after losing Ray Lewis, Paul Kruger, Ed Reed, Cary Williams and others.  The signing of Elvis Dumervil was one small step, but the draft helped improve this defense even more.

Bringing in Matt Elam in the first round was a good first step to improving this team.  Elam was a heavy-hitter at Florida; he simply finds ways to get to the ball-carrier and wrap up to make the tackle.  He will be a solid replacement for Reed in terms of that aggressive attitude at safety.

In the second round, they were able to bring in a first-round-caliber player in Arthur Brown.  He was a very productive player at Kansas State and a sure tackler.  Along with playing well against the run, he is a solid linebacker in coverage.

A solid pick in the sixth round was Aaron Mellette, the wide receiver out of Elon.  With a 6'2'' frame, he is an interesting prospect in the red zone.  He is a solid route-runner with solid speed, although he won't burn anyone in the secondary by any means.

With so many players leaving, the Ravens found a way to bring in guys to quickly fill those holes.  They did a great job in the draft and will continue to rebuild their team to make another run at a Super Bowl.

Ellis that Hunter Pence should have caught on the warning track. Pence slowed down at the end of his route as he was moving towards center fielder Angel Pagan, and had the ball clank off of his glove as a result.

To Lincecum's credit, he was able to pitch around that misplay by striking out Skip Schumaker and then getting Matt Kemp to fly out with the bases loaded to get out of the second inning jam.

Last year, the wheels typically fell off the bus in those situations, as Lincecum allowed batters to hit .286/.400/.487 with runners in scoring position.

In Lincecum's first start of this season, he was able to pitch through the messes created by his lack of control and by the Giants' sloppy defense. The Dodgers were just 1-for-9 with four walks and a sacrifice fly against Lincecum with runners in scoring position.

Both of the Dodgers' runs off of Lincecum were unearned. One run scored as the result of a Sanchez' passed ball and another run was because of an error by Buster Posey at first base.

Lincecum put 11 men on base (including the Posey error), but stranded nine of them. Stranding runners was a big problem for The Freak last year—his 67.8 percent strand rate was the sixth worst in baseball in 2012.

The improved ability to strand runners and pitch effectively with runners in scoring position were positive signs for Lincecum on Wednesday. However, his lack of control and inability to hold his velocity were troubling trends that carried over from last season into his first start of 2013.

Lincecum had the fourth worst walk rate in the league last season, and his seven walks in just five innings of work was not an encouraging development.

Lincecum came out of the gate throwing his fastball between 91-93 miles per hour in the first inning according to the radar gun on the Comcast television broadcast. However, he never hit 93 again after the first. By the end of the night, his fastball was sitting between 88-90 MPH.

Lincecum's inability to maintain his velocity beyond the opening frame is a big reason why he would flourish more in a relief role as he did in the postseason last year. If he only had to go through a lineup one time, his velocity would likely play up in those shorter stints. Instead of throwing 88-93, perhaps his velocity would shoot back up into the 93-96 as it has for converted relievers like Glenn Perkins and Wade Davis, to name two examples.

Perkins' average fastball velocity was 89.7 MPH in his final year as a starter in 2009. Last year, his average fastball was 94.9 MPH coming out of the bullpen.  Davis' average fastball velocity jumped from 91.4 to 93.5 MPH with the conversion to relief last year with the Rays, though Kansas City has decided to move him back to the rotation.

Yet, despite Lincecum's ability to pitch out of jams on Wednesday, it's still unclear that he can be an effective starter this season. If he continues to walk the park, the odds are high that it will eventually catch up to him as it did last year.

If he can't maintain his velocity, he'll have to start showing better control to compensate for his diminished stuff. Reduced velocity combined with declining control is obviously not a winning combination.

Tim Lincecum got a win and only allowed two unearned runs on Wednesday. The Giants can feel positive about that for a few days. However, no one should go into Lincecum's next start feeling overly optimistic. He still has a long way to go before getting back to being the ace he once was.

Jon Jones: Judging His Legacy Post UFC 159

Jon Jones has put his stamp down for being the greatest mixed martial artist of all time. At the young age of 25, Jones has defeated all comers and done so in the most impressive of fashions.

UFC 159 saw him defeat rival Chael Sonnen with ease. Even though many saw it as a foregone conclusion, the win was impressive in the sense that Jones beat Sonnen at his own game.

With that win, Jones moves to 18-1 in his career that started in 2008. His only loss came as a result of a disqualification against Matt Hamill, a fight Jones dominated and should have won via stoppage before the DQ came.

Not only is he likely the greatest light heavyweight of all time, but he may be the best fighter of all time. Just consider the opposition he has faced to get where he is today.

Before manhandling Chael Sonnen, he tapped out a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in Vitor Belfort. Belfort was a dangerous opponent due to his hand speed and submission skills, but Jones disregarded all of that with his own skills.

He has beaten former champions in Belfort, Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Mauricio Rua and Rashad Evans. All of those other than Evans ended via finish, as Jones submitted Jackson, Belfort and Machida while knocking out Rua, who was considered to be one of the best light heavyweights ever before Jones came onto the scene.

Ryan Bader, Vladimir Matyushenko and Brandon Vera are all highly respected MMA veterans in their own right, and Jones dismantled all of them. He outwrestled and choked out Bader, quickly smashed Matyushenko with wrestling and elbows and broke Vera's face with vicious elbows.

All of these wins have put the legacy of Jones above the rest. Fedor Emelianenko and Anderson Silva are long to be considered the greatest MMA fighters ever, but in the time Jones has completed all of these accomplishments, he has to be considered better than both.

Under-the-Radar 2013 NBA Draft Sleepers Guaranteed to Make an Impact

I'm not sure how many people are sleeping on Jamaal Franklin anymore, but this kid is guaranteed to make an impact regardless of where he's drafted.

Franklin's versatility as a scorer, passer, rebounder and defender allow him to contribute even when his jumper isn't falling. And right now, it's his shooting consistency that's holding him back.

But there's reason to believe this will come around. Though he only shot 28 percent from downtown this year, he did make 1.3 of them per game. Franklin is a capable shooter, he just needs to improve his consistency.

Otherwise, Franklin is the real deal across the basketball board. He's an exceptional athlete who can play on and off the ball and contribute on all fronts.

As a junior, he improved as a half-court scorer, adding the step-back jumper and fadeaway into his offensive arsenal. He also averaged over nine rebounds per game despite being just 6'5'', illustrating his motor and above-the-rim presence.

Franklin is also a willing and visionary passer. He led the team in assists, as well as scoring, rebounding and steals, being the only player in the country to do so.

He's my first-round sleeper of the draft, and someone I expect to make a quick impact once he reaches the next level.

Fantasy Baseball 2013: Prospects to Draft Late and Stash on Your Bench

Stashing prospects away on your bench in fantasy baseball isn't the most exciting part of your draft-selection process, but if you play it the right way it could be the most rewarding aspect of your season.

Guys like Aroldis Chapman and Stephen Strasburg have been late-season callups or injured-reserve guys during their first two seasons of big-league play, and that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to minor-league prospects itching to make it to the majors this year.

Enjoy selecting in the first few rounds—it's the best part of the fantasy baseball draft. But be diligent enough to know that shrewd moves like taking a prospect that will be back with the big club very soon could end up being your most important pick in the draft, even if it doesn't seem like it at the time.

The Texas Rangers have stockpiled top prospects like Profar, Mike Olt and pitchers Justin Grimm and Martin Perez, but right now there is no place for those guys in Arlington.

Profar, widely considered the top prospect in baseball by many pundits (including MLB.com's Watch List), is stuck behind shortstop Elvis Andrus and second baseman Ian Kinsler on the Rangers' depth chart. Texas flirted with the idea of moving Kinsler to either first base or the outfield and/or trading Andrus during the offseason, but those ideas are a speck of the past and Profar looks headed for minor-league camp rather than a starting role (via MLB.com).

There's absolutely nothing wrong with starting the kid in Triple-A. Just make sure you don't forget about him this year, because he will be back in Arlington during the 2013 season.

The Rangers are in a transitional period in the organization. Gone are big sticks Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli and "Mr. Ranger" Michael Young. In their place the Rangers will rely on free-agent signings Lance Berkman and A.J. Pierzynski to provide the veteran leadership while counting on former role players David Murphy, Nelson Cruz and Mitch Moreland more than ever.

After hitting a home run in his first at-bat with the big club last season and impressing everyone from owner Nolan Ryan to manager Ron Washington, Profar has the tools and the pedigree to form a fearsome tandem with Andrus up the middle for Texas. He hit .281 in 126 games for Texas' Double-A affiliate in 2012, blending power (14 HR), speed (16 SB) and an ability to get on base (.820 OPS).

Kinsler stands in his way, but the Rangers will have a number of options (injury, poor outfield play, slow start) to move Kinsler from second base to stop blocking Profar's development as a pro.

Already being touted as the fastest man in baseball, Hamilton was sent out of major-league camp before he could earn a shot at a very crowded Cincinnati outfield this season.

Hamilton is already making waves after a groundbreaking 2012 minor-league season in which he stole 155 bases, hit .311 and made heads turn with his ability to change the game with his legs. The SS-turned-outfielder will start the season in the minors, but his speed is too great to keep away from the rest of the world for long.

Forbes named Hamilton one of their "Sports Names You Need to Know" after his record-breaking 2012 campaign. It's high praise for a guy that isn't even a full-time MLB player yet, but goes to show you that big things are expected from a man who has the greatest shot (on paper) to break Rickey Henderson's all-time record.

As stated before, the Reds have a crowded outfield. Shin-Soo Choo, Jay Bruce and Ryan Ludwick are manning the three OF spots, but it's hard to see the Reds sticking with the injury-prone Choo in center field for long if things get off to an unceremonious start.

Be sure to keep Hamilton in mind during your draft this year. In true Billy Hamilton fashion, there's a good chance he scoots off your board very quickly late in drafts if you don't pay attention.

Cole, the No. 1 pick from UCLA who has lit the minors on fire so far, was disappointed that he didn't make the Pittsburgh rotation right out of the gate in spring training (via Yahoo! Sports).

After posting a 9-7 record and a 2.80 ERA through three levels of the minor leagues in 2012, Cole made an early push to grab one of the last couple of spots in the rotation this year in camp. However, he didn't do quite enough to avoid the minor league cuts, and therefore isn't worthy of a high pick in your draft.

His lively fastball (98 MPH) is his best pitch right now, but Cole commands four pitches that will all be dangerous at the MLB level and will keep Pittsburgh looking for opportunities to use the youngster in the rotation very soon.

Cole was on the UCLA staff with Cleveland Indians' prospect Trevor Bauer, but got more praise as the better pitcher of the two. Bauer has already received big-league time, but Cole has work to do to get to that level.

His comments about being demoted are enough to tell you that this kid is hungry, has all the tools to succeed up top and if he comes out firing in Triple-A like he did in the minors last season, the Pirates won't be able to keep his strikeout per inning potential away from the team for long. As such, make sure he's stashed away for a rainy day if your pitching staff leaves something to be desired to start the season.

Scholes can change 39 in November and could yet retire from the game, but the Scot says the former England international still has a part to play in either case. NIT Scores 2013: Best Performances from First Round

The NIT tournament has come to be known as the so-called "second-tier" college basketball tournament, but don't tell that to the 16 teams that have moved on to the second round in the 2013 version of this event.

Those teams have scrapped and clawed their way to being one step closer to New York City, Madison Square Garden and a berth in the 2013 NIT Final Four.

Like the big tournament scheduled to fully kick off on Friday, the 2013 NIT has been full of surprises already, including a No. 1 (Kentucky) and two No. 2 (Tennessee and UMass) seeds going home on the first day.

Whether you're a fan of the NIT or not, there's not a doubt in the world that there is good basketball left to be played from the kids that didn't make it to the NCAA tournament. That showed during the first round on Tuesday and Wednesday and will likely show through again as the NIT marches closer to the Big Apple.

In case you missed it, here's a look at all the scores from the first round of the NIT, complete with the best performances from teams that are clearly hungry to avenge their exclusion from big-time March Madness play.

Head coach Scott Drew tweaked the lineup to include California native Gary Franklin (who works out with Long Beach State players in the summer time), and it payed off as Franklin scored 11 points and dished out six assists while senior guard Pierre Jackson started the game on the bench.

Led by Brady Heslip's eight three-pointers and 26 points, Drew's team had seven guys score in double figures. Baylor also poured in 16 three-pointers and shot an unconscious 63.5 percent from the floor—matched only by the 69.6 percent the team shot from deep.

After being one of the last bubble teams eliminated from contention in the NCAA tournament, Baylor made sure the selection committee second-guessed themselves with this win on Wednesday night. It's bittersweet for both fans and the Bears, because of the impressive nature of the win and the thoughts of what could have been this season.

If you would have told me Louisiana Tech would roll into Florida State and overcome a nine-point second-half deficit to beat the Seminoles before this game was played, I would have called you crazy.

That's exactly what the Bulldogs did on Tuesday night, using 27 points from sophomore Raheem Appleby and another 16 from freshman Alex Hamilton to down the 'Noles in the opening round of the tournament, forcing careless turnovers and out-rebounding Florida State in the process.

After a disappointing exit from the WAC tournament (an event the Bulldogs had a chance to win to make the NCAA tournament), this game was a bit of a revenge game for Louisiana Tech, especially after seeing its tournament hopes dashed over the weekend.

The Bulldogs made senior Michael Snaer's last game in front of a home crowd one he'll likely want to forget, even though the clutchest player in the ACC had 24 points and did everything he could to keep playing in the NIT.

Matched up with No. 1 Southern Mississippi in the second round, Louisiana Tech could be a sleeper pick to win the whole thing by the end of April.

The Bears and the Colonials have something in common after the first round of the 2013 NIT: They both beat top seeds hailing from the vaunted SEC.

Well, maybe vaunted is a poor word, but both Mercer and Robert Morris sent Tennessee and Kentucky home early, raising questions about the level of focus from both amid missing out on the NCAA tournament during Sunday's selection process.

Kentucky had to travel to Robert Morris because Rupp Arena is being used for the second round of the NCAA tournament and looked sloppy and careless throughout the game on Tuesday. Freshmen Archie Goodwin, Alex Poythress and Willie Cauley-Stein all have major decisions to make about the NBA, and this game could be a precursor to returning.

Mercer, the Atlantic Sun runners-up to NCAA tournament No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast, continue to thrive under pressure this season. They have a win over top-seeded Alabama (on the road, no less) earlier this season and played Georgia and New Mexico relatively close in losses.

The Bears came out and took it to the Volunteers, like the Colonials, opening up a six-point halftime lead and maintaining it over the course of the second half behind 25 points from guard Travis Smith.

The NIT is all about teams who want to prove they don't belong there. Tennessee and Kentucky had no interest in carrying that burden, while the hungry Robert Morris and Mercer squads did. Motivated opponents or not, these two teams deserve a lot of credit for showing no hesitation when punching a bigger opponent in the mouth from the tip.

I had given up a little bit on BYU, particularly because it looked somewhat plain in losses to Gonzaga earlier this season.

I'm a man that can admit when I'm wrong, because BYU has a good chance to breeze through the rest of this tournament and wind up in New York City at the Final Four.

In any event, the Cougars' best two players had things going on Tuesday night. Brandon Davies and Tyler Haws combined for 57 points, and Matt Carlino added another 20 as the Cougars put up 90 points on the visiting Washington Huskies.

With Tennessee out of the picture in that section and the shots already falling for BYU, this is the kind of game that could spark this team to the Final Four. It certainly deserves a mention on the most impressive performances of the opening two days of action.

Things are underway in the 2013 NIT and appear to only be getter better by the hour. You don't wanna miss the final 16 teams battle it out for NIT supremacy.

You imagine, which will produce enough separation between ANYONE and him, including Federer? You bet!!!!!!!!!! Heck, as of this rate and with recent landscape, you will be mad to doubt if he'll move EVEN the absolute most CONSECUTIVE months @ No. 1 - with time to spare. He's @ 53 with 237 as history. Shaft Review – Nippon Modus 3 Tour 130 Iron Shaft

By: Matt SaternusNippon has long been a favorite iron shaft among those in the know, carrying a tremendous reputation for tight tolerances and great feel.  So why aren't they more prevalent?  One reason is certainly a lack of marketing, but another big reason was the lack of options for "better players."

Nippon was primarily known for lighter weight steel that launched the ball high.  Even the Modus3 Tour 120, while heavier in weight, was a higher launching shaft similar to a KBS Tour.  But now, with the Modus3 Tour 130, Nippon has a shaft that aims to compete with the kings of the hill, Project X and Dynamic Gold.  Does it hit the mark?

The starkest difference between a Nippon shaft and any other steel shaft on the market is feel.  There's a crisp and clean feel that is the signature of a Nippon, and no other steel shaft that I've tried can match it.  The Modus3 Tour 130 is no exception.

It should also be noted that the balance point of the Modus3 Tour 130 is higher than Dynamic Gold, leading to a club that feels lighter than it is.

In the looks department, the Modus3 has bold, red graphics printed directly on the shaft.  In this golfer's opinion, that's the single biggest "Looks" upgrade a steel shaft can have: no one likes wrinkly shaft stickers.

Finally, I want to mention that, just like with the Modus3 Tour 120's that I tested, the tolerances are amazing.  I weighed each of the eight shafts and none weighed less than 123.5 grams and none more than 124.5 grams.  For the club builder or the spec-obsessed, choosing Nippons is a no-brainer.

For the Performance testing, I installed the Nippon Modus3 130 shafts into a set of Wilson FG Tour V2 heads.  They were tested against a set of Dynamic Gold S300 shafts that were installed in the exact same heads.  Testing was done on a FlightScope X2 launch monitor.

In head to head testing in the lab, the Modus3 Tour 130 matched the Dynamic Gold shot for shot.  Launch was virtually identical throughout the set as were the spin rates.  There was also no discernible difference in accuracy: good swings resulted in good, predictable shots.  Bad swings produced similar results as well.

Additionally, I had the chance to play 36 holes with the Modus3 while vacationing away from snowy Chicago.  The transition to playing the Modus3 was non-existent.  All my irons went the same distance as they do with Dynamic Gold, shots flew on the same trajectory, and the dispersion was excellent (even smacked a pin).

Having been playing Nippon shafts for more than 6 months now, I've fallen in love with their soft feel. The same rings true with the N.S. Pro Prototype shaft – launching probably a bit lower than my current gamers – the 950 GH. The N.S. Pro Prototypes require just a bit more loading than the 950 GH and wouldn't let me get away with a lazy swing.

With the addition of the Modus3 Tour 130, there's now a Nippon shaft for absolutely everyone.  While some might flinch at the price, I think that the feel and the unmatched tolerances make Nippons well worth the money.  Whether you're upgrading some old heads or getting fit for a new set of irons, make sure Nippon is on your list of "Must Try" items.

But what is most remarkable of all is the way in which Ferguson has simply not allowed any other club — whatever their wealth and resources, whatever their ownership structure or management - to have any prolonged period of dominance. He arrived in England intent on taking on Liverpool and achieved that; he then dealt with the challenge of Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, Chelsea and now Manchester City.

City's geographic proximity to United will have meant this latest title triumph may, in Ferguson's quiet moments of reflection, mean more to him than any other in recent years.

Speculation surfaced this week that Pulis would quit City once the 40-point target is reached, potentially as early as Saturday should they beat Norwich City at the Britannia Stadium. But after meeting the owner, Peter Coates, on Tuesday for lunch, Pulis insists no word was uttered of a potential early exit.

"We sat there for three or four hours chatting away about everything, and he never mentioned anything about whether I was leaving or not," said Pulis. "If I was going to walk away then I would have told him by now, and I certainly didn't mention anything about walking away.

"This football club has been absolutely fantastic to me. The Coates family are wonderful, wonderful people to work for. My respect for them goes a lot further than just closing a door and walking away. People who know me know I'm not somebody who just walks off into the sunset."

Launching a vigorous defence of himself, given the criticism that has flowed over a wretched second half of the season he said: "At a club like ours you can have good times and bad times in the Premier League. For seven and a half years at this football club, I don't think I've done too badly, and I don't think the club has done too badly either.

"Do you get judged over a bad period of three months? Or do you get judged over a period of time? Everything is instant. Everybody wants results, results and results, and if you don't get them I understand.

"I'm big enough and experienced to know if you don't get results in this job then there is pressure on you, and you have to deal with that pressure."

But even if Pulis keeps Stoke in the Premier League for a sixth consecutive season, he cannot currently state whether he will be around for the next campaign. "Let's get to 40 points and then we can start talking about everything else," he said. "I hope and want to be here but it's everybody else, and the two most important factors in this are the family and myself. I've not said anything and the family haven't said anything."

French starlet Mehdi Abeid looks set to leave Newcastle United - ChronicleLive

The 20-year-old was signed from Lens just two years but has not made the progress United expected of him in the last two seasons.

Abeid made an instant impression at United in the summer of 2011 when Alan Pardew added him to his first- team squad to tour the United States.

The Algeria midfielder's contributions last season were in the league and FA Cup, while this campagn just two appearances in the Europa League this term tell their own story.

Pardew had hoped Abeid would step up to the plate in the first half of the season after being part of the first-team squad last summer during the club's tour of Germany and Austria.

However, even though Pardew's team was besieged by injuries in the first phase of the season, Abeid did not impress enough in training to stake a claim.

That resulted in him being farmed out on loan to Scottish Premier League outfit St Johnstone, where he has made 10 appearances under the watchful eye of ex-Northern Ireland and Manchester City star Steve Lomas and former Toon keeper Tommy Wright.

However, the Chronicle understands St Johnstone are not going to follow up their interest in the player despite solid performances.

Meanwhile, United supporters are hoping to see goalkeeper Steve Harper awarded with a testimonial after 20 years of service.

The matter was discussed at the latest NUFC Fans United meeting which was attended by Newcastle's supporters liaison officer Lee Marshall.

The notes from the meeting said: "It was felt he club should reward Steve's loyal  service with a testimonial and a number of people felt it was disappointing nothing had been announced."
