Spurs would compete strongly in Champions League, says Tom Carroll - Tottenham & Wood Green Journal

Tom Carroll believes Tottenham would be strong contenders in the Champions League if they can secure a top-four finish in their final six games.

The 20-year-old has played 21 times for the Lilywhites after breaking through at the start of the last campaign – with nine of his appearances coming in the Europa League – and, like his senior team-mates, he is keen to test himself in Europe's elite competition.

However, Andre Villas-Boas' side currently sit outside the top four, and Carroll knows they face a big test against Manchester City at White Hart Lane tomorrow.

"The dream for everyone is to play in the Champions League, so if this club can do it it will be great, just like a couple of years ago," said Carroll. "I'm sure we'd compete and do well if we get there.

"I was in the stands for the [2010-11 Champions League] home games with my family, just watching, but the atmosphere's fantastic and everyone loves European nights. It would be great if we could get there.

"We've had a few disappointing results recently but the lads all stick together and hopefully on Sunday we'll all be able to produce something.

"It's a massive game for us. We know City are a top side and it's tough no matter what team they put out. They've got a lot of class players but points are massive for us, and at this stage of the season three points would be great.

"I watched City play against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final last weekend. They played some great stuff and they've got some really key players who we'll need to stop on the day, but I know we're good enough to do that so hopefully we can get a positive result."

Carroll also harbours international ambitions after winning his first cap for England's Under-21s last month, and he is eyeing a place in Stuart Pearce's squad for this summer's European Under-21 Championship in Israel.

"I've been involved with the Under-21s before but didn't manage to get a cap so this time it was great to be involved and to put on the shirt – that was a great experience for me," said Carroll.

"It's a really good tournament to be involved in. Hopefully if I get a few more games between now and the end of the season for Spurs I'll impress Stuart Pearce, if he's watching, and get another call-up."
