Tottenham need a gain in Switzerland to advance to the Europa League semifinals. Paris Saint-Germain suffered (yeah, suffered) a 2-2 house draw in the initial leg of their Champions League quarterfinal and while they did well to draw in the next leg, it absolutely was 1-1 and they went out on absent goals. Although a step down in competitions to the Europa League, Tottenham Hotspur find them in the same position -- tied 2-2 on aggregate heading to the 2nd leg away. Luckily for Spurs, though, they are maybe not playing Barcelona. Instead, Tottenham will play Basel, against whom winning away is a much simpler task. But Basel are still an excellent staff who have recently taken scalps from Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Sporting Lisbon in European competition. Oh, and then there is last week when Basel didn't only get yourself a result at White Hart Lane, they outplayed Spurs for exercises. Which was a Spurs staff with Gareth Bale and, for a few days, Aaron Lennon, also. Neither of the two is likely to be available to Andre Villas-Boas on Thursday, joining Jermain Defoe on the counter for a match where Spurs need a goal, and probably two considering how out of sorts their protection appeared against Basel yesterday. Minus the group of opponents, all eyes are going to be on Emmanuel Adebayor and Gylfi Sigurdsson. Both have seen their kind tick up of late and will undoubtedly be expected to carry the majority of the fighting load. But it is Lewis Holtby an Clint Dempsey who may most need certainly to glow for Spurs and turnaround what has been an underwhelming start to 2013 with 90 sterling minutes in Basel. But inspite of the uphill climb, Tottenham remain confident. After all, a gain and Spurs are to the semifinals, away goals be damned. "You cannot tell what's likely to happen in baseball but, generally, you get what you deserve," Michael Dawson said. "So it's down to us and we're in an excellent place to proceed through, despite what some individuals think." It will help that Basel aren't Barcelona, too.
