The No. 8 seed Vermont Tar Heels (24-10, 12-6 ACC) will square off against the No. 9 seed Villanova Wildcats (20-13, 10-8 Big East) in both teams' first game of the 2013 NCAA tournament. While UNC can have the more storied system, a better record and a better seed, we all know that means nothing in March. It indicates even less to a Villanova staff that has offed four of the top-16 clubs in the AP Poll through the regular season. The Wildcats are massive murders, and those Carolina blue and argyle tops will have no influence on them whatsoever. The Tar Heels, on another hand, does not have just one gain against the current Top 25. They've crushed who they were likely to, but they've frequently come up short from the big guys. Carolina must manage this team right into the bottom, when you compare both clubs. The Tar Heels have now been on a defensive tear using their small lineup, snatching 9.2 steals and requiring 16.2 turnovers per game. On the flip side, 'Nova is quitting 15.6 per game. This UNC squad wants to run, and things could easily get pretty nasty if the Wildcats aren't careful with the steel. But the Wildcats possess some size down low that can counter the velocity and athleticism of the Tar Heels' four-guard collection. If JayVaughn Pinkston proceeds to play like he did in the Big East tournament, the 260-pounder could possibly be quite the load for P.J. Hairston. He averaged 16.5 points per game throughout the tourney. I think we're in for a thrilling game no matter what part you are on. Stay the following for changes, live results and analysis with this tourney battle. Where: Kansas City, Mo. When: 7:20 p.m. Broadcast: TNT Hairston ripped the webbing between his middle finger and ring against Florida State. He still scored 41 points within the next two games, including 28 in the title game. Obviously, the place has not influenced him much. Keys to the Game for North Carolina: It's just about inevitable that the Tar Heels will be jacking up threes like there's no tomorrowa'and there will be no tomorrow should they don't fall. Photographers P.J. Hairston and Reggie Bullock will need to be selective with the threes they simply take. That's once the opposing teams make their runs, If they continue to miss and shoot. Which brings me to rebounding, where in fact the Tar Heels have struggled mightily with the newest collection. They're just taking down 36.3 per sport, which can be right around Villanova's mark. But that doesn't mean they don't want to get off their feet. UNC is extremely streaky, and you will see an amount of time in the game the players can't buy a shot. That's if the rebounders need to step up and dominate. UNC will also have to be mindful having its turnovers. It's just stopping 10.4 per game since going little, but 'Nova can also be pushing 15 per game. Paige had a highly skilled ACC tourney function, where he only quit three turnovers. But he also had 13 within the two games prior to the tourney. He must be the Paige if the Tar Heels wish to move on to the next round we saw last week. Keys to the Overall Game for Villanova: The Wildcats have now been vulnerable to turnovers, quitting a tremendous 15.6 per game. When matched with the Tar Heelsa'forcing 16.2 per gamea'that becomes a recipe for disaster. Four Wildcats average over two turnovers per game, but none will be more important than ground basic Ryan Arcidiacono. He brings the group with 2.8 per game, and is going to be matched up with Marcus Paige and Dexter Strickland, who both average 1.2 picks per game. The 'Nova people will also have to obtain their hot streak going from the border. That has been a weakness for this Tar Heel security, and Ryan Arcidiacono and James Bell are perfectly effective at knocking down the three ball. Both are streaky, but the good talent will be needing to last 40 minutes to counter the onslaught of threes Carolina likes to jack up. Eventually, the Wildcats need to make the most of their size. JayVaughn Pinkston has about 40 pounds on P.J. Hairston, and they need to get it with their primetime post man to provide a heavyweight punch. Mouphtaou Yarou also offers a weight advantage within the somewhat smaller and quicker James Michael McAdoo. Yarou will undoubtedly be looked to to help 'Nova gain the jump gain over a team that's struggling to pull them in with the smaller selection.
