Current Nba 'Moneyball' Ranks

It should come as no surprise that the man who invented the most popular PER full rates highly on this list. John Hollinger was hired in to the Memphis Grizzlies' front company not four weeks ago, but heas already made one of the best moves of the NBA year in trading Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors. And whilst the deal was financially motivated at its heart, you can be certain that analytics played a big role, also. Honestly, itas difficult to overstate how much trading Gay served Memphis. Not merely did finding Gayas deal off the books allow the Grizz to prevent a raw luxury-tax billa'it also helped to supply the Grizzlies offense with some much-needed space. Although Gay includes a staras name, his creation with the Grizzlies this season never came close to living around that. He was one of the least efficient offensive players in the group (you can guess Hollinger was paying attention to that one) and placed only a 14.2 PER all through his time with the Grizzlies. Based on Synergy Sports Technology, Gay was the league's 281st most efficient unpleasant person when he was with the Grizzlies this season, calculating just 0.85 things per possession (PPP). To put that in perspective, if a team submitted that type of productivity, they would simply function as the worst unpleasant squad in NBA history, breaking the rate set by the 2002-03 Denver Nuggets and 1976-77 Nj-new Jersey Nets by over eight points per 100 assets (per Basketball-Reference). The problem was that Gay, a woeful outside shooter, was taking a heap of serious twos and three-pointers for the Grizzlies (via HoopData). Someone was needed by memphis to place a floor for Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, but Gay certainly wasnat the player to do it. The recently added Tayshaun Prince, but, is really a career 37 % shooter from heavy and a more attractive choice for a group as space-challenged as Memphis. Toss in the fact that Memphis got a successful young large in Ed Davis, and the offer becomes a complete robbery. But if you look at Gay as some more conventional thinkers could, the trade doesn't look all that best for Memphis. In the end, Gay is relatively young, scores lots of factors and gets the size and athleticism to match up with people like Kevin Durant. Why could you desire to trade some guy like that? Plainly Hollinger, among the first to jump in to stats, didn't view it like that, nevertheless you can bet that lots of other front office men could have. Hollinger told NBA.comas David Schuhmann: Rudy was an excellent person but Tayshaunas ability to move and hit catch-and-shoot jumpers ideally changes a number of the athleticism and shot-creating ability we quit in this deal. Defensively we probably get even better, since we still have that 6-9 small forward who can guard, however now we also have an athletic large who plays above the rim in Ed, which is something we really didnat have before. Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins certainly didnat love the deal, but his team went 18-7 since then, and the long-term gains speak for themselves.
